A 2012 Hyundai Sonata had been the target of an attempted theft.

The amateur thieves broke the ignition and damaged the plastic covers around it.

The ignition cylinder was badly damaged. On vehicles like this, the ignition can normally be removed easily by pressing a release pin from underneath and pulling the ignition out.

However, the pin can only be pressed when the key is in the ACC position. Since the ignition had been broken and the key could no longer be turned, we had to drill out the ignition.

The drilling took about 5–7 minutes and a couple of broken drill bits.

We installed a new ignition, connected the electrical connector, and put the plastic covers back in place.

Total job time: 30–40 minutes
